Agro-Morphological Characterization of Sicilian Chili Pepper Accessions for Ornamental Purposes

2020

The species belonging to the genus Capsicum have been widely used as decorative vegetables, however only a few genotypes are available for this purpose. The goal of the present work was the agro-morphological characterization of several chili pepper accessions cultivated into different pot sizes (10, 14, 18 or 20 cm diameters). The agro-morphological characterization of 19 accessions was performed following IPGR (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute) descriptors: plant height (PH), plant canopy width (PCW), PH/PCW ratio, plant growth habit, plant visual quality, first flower emission, fruiting start, end of harvest, fruit number, fruit length, fruit width, fruit color at mature s…

Assessing coastal habitats with Juniperus sp. pl. in the Iberian Peninsula and on the Balearic Islands

2021

Coastal habitats with Juniperus sp. pl. represent the mature stage in the ecological succession of dune ecosystems. Maritime junipers (Juniperus macrocarpa), prickly junipers (J. navicularis) and c...

The Static Stability of the Tropopause Region in Adiabatic Baroclinic Life Cycle Experiments

2011

Abstract The tropopause inversion layer (TIL) is a region of enhanced static stability just above the WMO-defined thermal tropopause. It is a ubiquitous feature in midlatitudes and is well characterized by observations. However, it is still lacking a satisfactory theoretical explanation. This study utilizes adiabatic baroclinic life cycle experiments to investigate dynamical mechanisms that lead to TIL formation. As the baroclinic wave grows, a strong TIL forms above anticyclonic anomalies, while no TIL is found above cyclonic anomalies; this is consistent with previous results. However, during the early growth phase there is no TIL in the global or zonal average: positive and negative anom…

Theory and Simulation of Multiphase Polymer Systems

2010

The theory of multiphase polymer systems has a venerable tradition. The 'classical' theory of polymer demixing, the Flory-Huggins theory, was developed already in the forties of the last century. It is still the starting point for most current approaches -- be they improved theories for polymer (im)miscibility that take into account the microscopic structure of blends more accurately, or sophisticated field theories that allow to study inhomogeneous multicomponent systems of polymers with arbitrary architectures in arbitrary geometries. In contrast, simulations of multiphase polymer systems are relatively young. They are still limited by the fact that one must simulate a large number of lar…
